Patron of of those suffering for nervous and mental afflictions.

Dymphna was born in 7th century Ireland to a pagan father and devout Christian mother. When she was fourteen, she consecrated herself to Christ and took a vow of chastity. Soon afterward, her mother died and her father - who had loved his wife deeply - began to suffer a rapid deterioration of his mental stability.

It was suggested the her father re-marry quickly to help his mental state. He became obsessed with his daughter who shared her mother's beauty. To escape her father's mis-guided plot to marry her Dymphna fled from her castle to Belgium with her priest and two trusted servants.

Eventually Dymphna's father tracked her down and when she again refused his proposal of marriage he struck her with is sword beheading her.  St. Dymphna died a virgin martyr at the age of 15.
