Feast day: May 15th
Patron of farmers and rural communities.
Isidore was a peasant day laborer. He tilled the soil on the estate of Juan de Vargas outside Madrid. He devoutly attended Mass every day before he went to work. He and his wife served the poor. It was said that angels accompanied him to work. Soon after his death in 1130, miracles were attributed to his intercession. In 1615 when King Philip of Spain was sick and in danger of death, Isidore's relics where brought to his bedside. The king was miraculously healed, and successfully petitioned for Isidore's formal canonization in 1622. Isidore is the patron saint of laborers, farmers, and many Spanish cities.
