Saint Rita of Cascia was a peasant from Roccaporena, Italy. From a very young age Rita wanted to remain a virgin, but her parents arranged a marriage for her as was the custom of that time and place. Fourteen years later, Rita's husband was murdered. After her husband's death and the death of her two sons, Rita joined the Augustinians of Cascia. Rita was with the Augustinians for forty years. Rita is often depicted with a rose because during the winter after her death a rose miraculously bloomed.

At the 100th anniversary of Rita's canonization, Pope Saint John Paul II said, "Rita offers her rose to each of you: in receiving it, spiritually strive to live as witnesses to a hope that never disappoints and as missionaries of a life that conquers death."

Saint Rita, pray for us!
